Context and mission

MSF International is the legal entity that coordinates MSF's 21 sections, 24 associations and other offices. Based in Geneva, MSF International provides information and support to the MSF movement, and implements international projects and initiatives at the request and on behalf of the MSF Movement.

The MSF Movement processes various categories of personal data on a large scale and is committed to ensuring that the rights and freedoms of the individuals to whom this data belongs are duly protected in accordance with both data protection and humanitarian principles.

The MSF Movement is developing its privacy program to better adapt to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and in this context is looking for an International Privacy Officer to assist in the development and coordination of its global privacy program.

Position within the Organisation

  • Part of the International MSF Data Protection Team
  • Will work in close collaboration with the International Data Protection Coordinator
  • Reports to the International Data Protection Steering Committee

Main responsibilities

1.Assistance in the Development and Implementation of the MSF Movement's new Data Protection Rules

As part of the MSF Data Protection Team and working in close collaboration with the International Data Protection Coordinator, the International Privacy Officer will:

  • Assist with the drafting of the new MSF Data Protection Rules;
  • Support the International Data Protection Coordinator with internal liaison to ensure the input of all relevant stakeholders into the process of development of the MSF Data Protection Rules;
  • Participate in the reflection and analysis concerning the development and implementation processes for the MSF Data Protection Rules;
  • Support the International Data Protection Coordinator and International Data Protection Steering Committee Chair with internal communications in respect of the MSF Data Protection Rules; and
  • Provide additional support to the MSF Data Protection Team as needed.

2.Data Protection Document Review, Amendment and Creation as Needed

With a view to optimizing resources and ensuring a common standard of data protection across the MSF Movement, the International Privacy Officer will, in collaboration with the International Data Protection Task Force, be responsible for developing, reviewing and/or updating GDPR-guided data protection templates and support documents including specific data protection clause templates (for employment contracts, contracts with third party contractors, etc), privacy notices, consent documentation, DPIA documentation, etc.

3.Legal and Market Watch

The International Privacy Officer will be responsible for monitoring external developments related to the GDPR and to data protection generally and communicating relevant information to the International Data Protection Coordinator and the Chair of the International Data Protection Steering Committee.



  • Master's degree or equivalent in Law, IT Security or other academic field related to compliance, privacy, data protection, and/or humanitarian organisations
  • Project management certification is an asset


  • At least three years' professional experience
  • Strong experience in project management
  • Experience with MSF or other humanitarian organisation is an asset
  • Professional experience in data protection and knowledge of the GDPR an asset


  • Genuine interest in, understanding of, and commitment to the humanitarian principles, social mission, operations, and challenges of MSF. Knowledge of MSF structure a considerable asset.
  • Pragmatic approach and attitude geared towards implementation
  • Excellent mastership of the English language (written and oral); French is a strong asset
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to adapt to unique business environment
  • Sensitivity and ability to work effectively with a variety of different people in different departments, contexts and from different backgrounds
  • Independence, impartiality and ability to question colleagues as required
  • Strong risk awareness and analytical ability
  • Change management skills
  • Knowledge of One Trust privacy management software an asset
  • Ability to translate legal language into operational language
  • Strong abilities to adapt to atypical situations and different cultural contexts, and to work with multidisciplinary and multicultural teams
